It appears the next big step for performance vehicles is to go electric, and Nissan is keen to get in on the action too. It has pointed out that the future Nissan GT-R could go all electric.
With Tesla proving that all-electric cars can be exciting with the Model S and its accompanying ‘Ludicrous Mode’, Porsche too debuted its forward-thinking electric offering with the Mission E Concept at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
Speaking to Top Gear UK, Nissan’s European EV director Gareth Dunsmore said, “the rate of change over the last five years has been phenomenal. We can’t build an electric GT-R today. But do I want to? I’d love to. Will we be able to do that in the future? I can’t see a technical reason why we wouldn’t be able to implement electric vehicle technology in something like a performance vehicle.”
Of course, Nissan won’t be starting from scratch should it start to develop an electric GT-R. For instance, its Nissan Leaf, which gained a bump in range recently, was made into a racer more than four years ago, dubbed the Nissan Leaf NISMO RC.
The next-generation Nissan GT-R (R36) is said to be previewed by the Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo, which will make its debut in “Fire Knight” red at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show in late October.
